A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
