The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
